No two surf launches are the same and you will never have identical conditions. Launching areas each have their own influencing factors that may include hidden underwater structures, rocks, sandbanks, currents, channels and sheltered areas. Therefore, launching at a new launch site for the first time may be daunting. Here are some pointers to help you find your way around.

Research the launching facility

Most launch sites do have a tractor with a push poll, however this facility may not be available every day of the week. If not, will you be able to launch with a four wheel based vehicle?

What are the launching fees?

Is there a restriction on launches per day?

What are the launching rules and procedures?

These are some of the important questions that you would need answers for prior to using a new launch site to avoid disappointment.

Get some local knowledge

It is always a good idea to consult with a local skipper that knows the launch site and is familiar with obstacles or features that makes the launch site different to others, it may even be a good idea to invite a local on the first launch to make sure you get familiar with the type of launch.

Observe the water formations over a full tide cycle.

During the change of tides, you may identify sandbanks and other structures that may not be visible during full tide. Even if you are planning to be out on the water over a full cycle, for example from high tide to high tide, it is wise to know what the formation looks like during low tide to make sure you are familiar with it should an emergency arise or drastic change in weather force you to shore sooner.

Get some contacts

Most launch sites require a log to be filled when using the launching facilities, however it is always a good call to get the commodore’s contact details or contact details of skippers that may also be out there on the water on the day. Always remember to inform launch site control and family members of your trip routes and plans for the day.

Get the information you need to be a considerate and responsible boater.

There are few things more frustrating than boaters leaving their vehicles and trailer in unauthorized areas making it difficult for other boaters to use the facilities. Therefore, it is crucial to find out where the designated areas are to leave your boat trailer and vehicle.

Is there a designated area for cleaning fish and washing boats and what are the procedures to be followed?

Watch and learn

Launching conditions and formations can change overnight, therefore it would be wise to get to the launch site early and to watch a couple of launches before you hit the water.

Suzuki wishes everyone safe boating!
