Suzuki has made the deliberate choice to offer this technology royalty-free.
In a bold step toward protecting our oceans, Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced that it will make all 34 patents related to its innovative microplastic collection device freely available to the industry.
The message is simple: the more companies that adopt this technology, the greater the impact we can make together.
Why Microplastics Matter
Microplastics — particles smaller than 5mm — are found in oceans, rivers, and lakes around the world. They pose a growing threat to marine life and ecosystems and ultimately find their way into the food chain.
For the marine industry, this raises an important question: how can we reduce our impact while continuing to move forward?
Suzuki developed the world’s first micro-plastic collecting device that can be installed on outboard motors and began production of outboard motors equipped with this device as standard equipment on select models in July 2022. By installing this device on outboard motors, micro-plastics near the water surface can be collected just by running the boat.
As the engine runs:
The process happens automatically. There is nothing extra for the operator to do — simply running the engine contributes to cleaner water.
Suzuki has made the deliberate choice to offer this technology royalty-free.
This allows other manufacturers to adopt and develop it without restriction, helping to accelerate progress across the industry. By removing barriers, Suzuki is encouraging broader participation in addressing a shared environmental challenge.
This initiative reflects a clear direction for the future of boating — one where innovation supports both performance and responsibility.
For customers, it reinforces confidence in a brand that invests in practical solutions. For the industry, it sets a standard for collaboration where the focus is on long-term impact.
Ocean pollution is not a challenge any single company can solve alone. By opening this technology to others, Suzuki is inviting the industry to move forward together.
The more widely this solution is adopted, the greater the impact it will have!
