Suzuki outboard motor
controls are systems that manage the operation of an outboard motor, allowing the operator to control the motor's speed, direction, and other functions. Suzuki offers a range of outboard engine remote control systems to cater for different boat types, user preferences and technological advancements. Here’s a general overview and the main types of
Suzuki outboard throttle systems:
Mechanical Remote Controls:
This refers to the “traditional” systems that use cables for throttle and gear shifts. A mechanical linkage connects the throttle and shift levers to the outboard motor. The throttle lever controls the motor's speed, while the shift lever controls the gear selection (forward, neutral, reverse).
Mechanical Control Variants:
- Side-Mount: Mounted on the side of the console. Lever position is interchangeable to mount on either left or right side of the console. This control setup allows for both single and dual installation, dual by joining two control boxes using the attachment kit available from Suzuki.
- Top-Mount or Binnacle: Mounted on top of the console, available for both single and dual installation.
- Flush-Mount or Concealed-Mount: Installed on the side of the boat for single installation use only.
- Tiller Handle: Integrated on the outboard for smaller and portable motors, however limited to engine size.
Suzuki Precision Control (SPC)
Advanced electronic throttle and shift system for mid-range to high-end models. This includes Fly-by-wire (drive-by-wire) technology for smooth operation and diagnostics. The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is the brain of the electronic control system. It receives input from sensors and sends output signals to the outboard motor. Sensors, such as throttle position sensors, engine speed sensors, and gear position sensors, provide input to the ECU. The operator's inputs, such as throttle and shift lever positions, are also transmitted to the ECU.
SPC Control Variants:
- Top-Mount or Binnacle: Mounted on top of the console, available for both single and dual installation
- Flush-Mount or Concealed-Mount: Installed on the side of the boat for single installation use only.
Dual/Multiple Engine Controls:
Allows unified control for
boats with multiple Suzuki outboards. This allows for single or dual-lever systems and integrated synchronization for optimal performance. The SPC system allows for installation of up to 6 Suzuki outboard engines which can be managed from either a single or second station, such as fly bridge etc.
Tiller Handle:
Tiller Handle Controls for smaller outboards feature a shift lever, engine start/stop button and integrated throttle shifting.
Optional tiller handles for larger units from 40hp up to 100hp include the shift lever, digital tachometer, power trim, engine start/stop buttons and integrated throttle shifting.
So how does it work?
1. Throttle Lever
The main control is the throttle lever or control handle, typically located on the helm console for larger boats or mounted on the tiller for smaller outboards. It functions in two main ways:
- Forward/Reverse: The lever is pushed forward for forward gear and pulled backward for reverse gear. Neutral is at the center position.
- Throttle Adjustment: The further you push or pull the lever from the center point (neutral), the more power is delivered to the engine, increasing and reducing speed.
2. Throttle Linkage and Cables
The throttle lever is connected to the engine via a system of throttle cables. These transmit the operators input to the outboard engine, adjusting the throttle plate in the engine's air intake system to control the amount of air and fuel mixture being sent to the combustion chambers.
3. Suzuki Precision Control (SPC)
In models equipped with Suzuki Precision Control (electronic throttle and shift):
- The throttle and gear shift commands are transmitted electronically rather than mechanically via cables.
- This results in smoother and quicker response, reduced maintenance, and more precise control.
4. Idle and Throttle Settings
- Idle Speed: The engine runs at a low speed with minimal fuel consumption when the throttle is at or near neutral.
- Throttle Range: As the throttle is moved further forward or backward, the engine RPM increases or decreases, allowing you to adjust the boat's speed.
- Some Suzuki outboards have the option to include the troll mode feature, allowing precise control over low-speed operation, which is great for fishing.
5. Trim and Tilt Control
The control system adjusts the
outboard motor's trim and tilt angles to optimize performance and stability.
6. Safety Features
Suzuki outboards include safety features such as:
- Neutral Start Protection: The engine can only start when the throttle lever is in the neutral position to prevent accidental acceleration.
- Emergency Stop Switch: A safety lanyard (kill switch) must be attached to the operator, shutting off the engine if the operator moves away from the helm.
- The control system monitors the outboard motor's operating parameters and alerts the operator to any issues or malfunctions.
Suzuki prides itself on delivering the ultimate boating
experience. This commitment is evident in our throttle systems, which are easy to use and operate smoothly on the water. Suzuki throttles are specifically designed for our outboards, ensuring seamless communication and play a crucial role in ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the outboard motor.
