Winter is dragging on, and we can't wait to get back on the water. Here's a DIY list of pre-summer boat preparations to keep you busy and enhance your excitement for the boating season.

1. Clean and Inspect the Hull

  • Wash the Hull: Use a mild soap and water to clean the hull, removing any algae, dirt, or grime. For tough stains, use a specialized boat cleaner.
  • Inspect for Damage: Look for cracks, chips, or signs of wear, and repair any damage to prevent further issues. If you're unsure, contact your nearest Suzuki authorized dealer.

2. Check the Engine

  • Oil and Filters: Change the engine oil and replace the oil filter to keep the engine running smoothly.
  • Fuel System: Inspect fuel lines for cracks or leaks, replacing any old or damaged lines. Check and replace the fuel filter if needed.
  • Spark Plugs: Remove and inspect the spark plugs, cleaning or replacing them if necessary.
  • Battery: Check the battery charge, top off the electrolyte levels if needed, and clean the terminals and connections.

3. Inspect and Test Safety Equipment

    • Life Jackets: Ensure life jackets are in good condition and easily accessible. Replace any that are damaged or expired.
    • Fire Extinguishers: Check that fire extinguishers are fully charged and in working condition.
    • Flares and Signaling Devices: Verify that your flares and other signaling devices are up to date and in good condition.

4. Check and Maintain the Electrical System

    • Wiring: Inspect all electrical connections and wiring for wear or damage, and repair or replace as needed.
    • Navigation Lights: Test all navigation lights to ensure they're functioning properly.

5. Clean and Maintain the Interior

    • Upholstery: Clean the boat’s upholstery and check for any tears or damage using a fabric cleaner suitable for marine upholstery.
    • Storage Compartments: Clean and organize storage compartments, ensuring they are dry and free from mold.

6. Inspect and Maintain the Propeller and Drive System

    • Propeller: Check for damage, such as dents or bends, and remove any debris around the propeller.
    • Drive System: Inspect for wear or leaks, and grease any fittings as needed.

7. Check the Trailer

    • Tires: Inspect trailer tires for wear and proper inflation. Consider replacing them if worn out.
    • Lights and Brakes: Test the trailer lights and brakes to ensure proper functioning.
    • Grease Bearings: Grease the trailer wheel bearings to prevent seizing up during use.

8. Prepare for Launch

    • Check Bilge Pump: Test the bilge pump to ensure it’s operational and clean the bilge area if needed.
    • Launch Equipment: Ensure you have all necessary equipment for launching, including ropes, fenders, and a launch checklist.

9. Review Local Regulations

  • Verify that you’re up to date with local boating regulations, including registration and safety equipment requirements.

10. Perform a Trial Run

  • Take your boat for a trial run before a big trip to identify any issues early on.
